WE shared the news that the next phase of a project to rejuvenate the city centre has been announced.

Cumberland Council’s project, called Carlisle Station Gateway, aims to target the city centre and the broader Borderlands region.

Here's how readers reacted.

Mally Chung said: "Make sure you put in plenty of Coach spaces for Avanti's constant rail replacement service. Or heated waiting rooms for the number of cancelled trains."

Lin Da said: "Folk visiting will be okay if they want a cuppa or something to eat but a bit scuppered if looking to do some shopping. Not much choice now in that respect, which saddens me as Carlisle used to have such a good range of shops back in the day."

Emma Seymour said: "Don't even go shopping.in town anymore there's only Home Bargains and Primark that are worth the trip."

Sean Dockerty said: "Some public toilets would be nice."

One web user said: "There's still plenty of shops, and the idea is that this will help encourage more. You can't complain that they're letting the town centre waste away but also complain when they invest in it."

Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said: "It is incredibly exciting to kick off these transformative initiatives, and as the local highway and transport authority, Cumberland Council is dedicated to enhancing the area for everyone, fostering active travel, and creating pedestrian connections that harmonise with these plans."
