UK drivers are being offered a free air conditioning check, with temperatures set to rise over the next few days.
Halfords is offering the complimentary service at its retail stores nationwide to support motorists amid the upcoming heatwave.
The company says that a functioning air conditioning system isn’t just about comfort - it's important for safety as well.
Chris Lunn, Halfords’ motoring expert, said: "Air conditioning systems can lose around 10% of their refrigerant each year, reducing cooling performance.
"A quick check can help identify whether your system is working as it should before you're caught out in traffic on a hot summer's day."
How to get the free air con check
If drivers want to receive a free air con check, they will need to input their licence plate number on the Halfords website.
From there, they will be able to book the check at their nearest store.
The free check includes an assessment of output temperature and refrigerant levels to ensure the system is operating effectively.
Halfords adds: "It's designed to see if the air con system simply needs to be topped up for optimal performance or is potentially in need of a more thorough inspection for leaks at one of our Autocentres."
If the check reveals a leak or a more complex issue, drivers can visit a Halfords Autocentre for a comprehensive Air Conditioning Diagnostic Check.
Unlike the check, this wouldn't be free and would cost £34.99.
This diagnostic includes:
- A temperature check
- A refrigerant check
- A leak test (using nitrogen)
- An inspection of key components, including the compressor, condenser, drive belts and hoses
Halfords adds: "Once the above checks have been completed, our team will then give you the option of the following service, during which we will replace and recharge lubricant and refrigerant levels in line with your manufacturer's recommendation."

This service could cost £74.99 or £139.99, depending on what type of refrigerant the car uses.
A well-maintained air conditioning system can help reduce driver fatigue during long journeys and prevent windows from misting up, improving visibility.
Air conditioning systems can naturally become less efficient over time, making regular checks every couple of years important.
