Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses after a woman was seriously injured in a crash near Carlisle.

Firefighters used electronic cutting equipment release her from the car before she was handed into the care of the North West Ambulance Service.

She was airlifted to hospital in Newcastle with multiple injuries.

It happened at about 5pm on Friday near the Crown and Thistle pub at Rockliffe.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "The collision occurred on the junction leading to Cargo.

"Two vehicles were involved - a silver Land Rover Freelander and a silver Ford Mondeo.

"The driver and only occupant of the Freelander was seriously injured suffering head, neck and back injuries and was airliftet to the RVI. The driver was a lone female in her forties.

"Three local males from the Ford Mondeo were treated at the scene for minor injuries."

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw the vehicles driving in the areas of Rockcliffe, Cargo and Kingstown, between 4.15pm and 4.45pm on Friday, to come forward to help with the investigation.
