A BUSY road in Carlisle is set to be partly closed off for two weeks to allow gas works to take place.

From Monday, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) will start work on Denton Street, Denton Holme.

NGN say the three-week project will upgrade the area's ageing gas distribution network in the area. In total NGN workers will replace about 450m of existing metal gas pipes with plastic ones.

The company says the existing gas mains have required several repairs in recent years and it will "endeavour to complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible and will provide regular updates throughout the project",

In order to carry out the work, the southbound side of the road will be closed for about two weeks between Charlotte Street and Nelson Street.

A signed diversion route will be in place via Charlotte Street, Junction Street, Dalston Road and Nelson Street.

There will also be temporary traffic lights throughout the duration of the project on Denton Street.

A temporary pedestrian crossing will replace the closed footpath crossing on Denton Street.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual throughout the project.

Matty McBride, business operational leader for NGN, said: “We have been working closely with Cumbria County Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may encounter, and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”
