Plans to build a new youth club in the town centre have been given a £100,000 boost.

Multi-millionaire entrepreneur Bill Holroyd is understood to have made the offer of a six figure sum to help develop the new project.

Youngsters in Keswick have not had a base to call their own since their centre on the Old Mill Site was flooded out in 2009.

Since then, the plot of land has been up for sale and the club has met in various places, thanks to the generosity of local businesses and property owners.

But new plans involve rebuilding the club on the site by the River Greta and developing some hosing there as well. It is expected the mixed project could cost upto £1.3m.

The blueprint for the future of the town's youth centre will be outlined at the group's annual general meeting later this month.

In his report, Phill Roberts, the chairman of the Keswick Youth Centre Committee, says the committee has “had a substantial six figure financial commitment of support

to develop youth centre services in Keswick”.

It is believed that the crucial promise of funds has come from Mr Holroyd.

The entrepreneur went to Keswick school before being expelled and going onto catering college and making his millions in the catering supply trade.

Mr Holroyd set up the Onside Youth Zone charity which establishes state-of-the art youth clubs across the country,

He has a holiday home in Grasmere and whenever he is in Cumbria he returns to Keswick. He and wife Julie recently opened a sensory garden in the town for which they provided

£53,000 in memory of Bill’s mum, Dorcas who had been in the local flower club and in raising money to restore Moot Hall.

As we released in August, he has said he will use his own money, rather than the charity’s, to help the town’s youth club

find a permanent new home in memory of his dad. Vernon

In his report, Mr Roberts says the new centre would be able to provide a meeting place for other youth groups in the town.

He added: “"This level of investment could not be justified for a youth club meeting on two nights per week.We will therefore be proposing that the project reaches much further and provides a centre for a number of services for young people including education, health and social activities.“The project will support the strategic development of a Keswick Plan for Young People and provide accommodation for many organisations involved with young people.”

Mr Roberts called on others to join the committee and has appealed to anyone with any financial or project management experience to contact him on 07730284529 or email phillroberts1@aol.com or attend the Youth Centre AGMon November 28 at The Quaker Meeting Rooms Keswick, at 7pm.
