Parents have their first chance to register their children for a place at a proposed new Cumbrian school.

Holme Head School in Carlisle is opening its doors tomorrow to visitors, families and parents who want to explore what the team behind it hopes to offer from September.

It comes as the team behind the Denton Holme proposal prepares to submit its formal application to form the new school to the Department for Education.

Local mother-of-two Alison Pate has spearheaded the idea from its infancy and now works as part of a team, which includes educationalist specialists, based in Carlisle and Nottingham.

She said: "Sunday is the first chance people will have to register their children for a place at the school.

"We've also got those people, teachers, who want to work at the school who are coming to volunteer and I'm also going to be leading two question and answer sessions for parents and visitors who want to find out more. We have had some great people come forward who want to work with us.

"The volunteers will be leading sessions for the children to allow families to look around too. The bid will be going to the DfE by the end of the month."

Holme Head School would operate in Holme Head House, which is owned by city early years expert Emmy Sealey and her husband Roger.

The team has devised the WHIS Kids School model which looks to provide children and families with an alternative form of education, based on best practice sourced from around the world.

Pupils would be encouraged to enjoy free play up until the age of seven.

The core curriculum will be based on wellbeing including relationships, community and emotional health.

Tomorrow's open day runs from 11am until 3pm. Mrs Pate will be leading question and answer sessions for visitors at 11.30am and 1.30pm.

Admission is £5 per family covering up to two children.

January 15 is the closing date for parents who are applying for places in reception or primary-aged children who are to move up into junior school in September.
