Business support is being sought to help push forward plans to open a new school in Carlisle later this year.

Those behind the bid to create a new WHISKids model of school in Denton Holme are seeking sponsorship and donations.

They warn that the school's opening may be delayed if funding is not found.

Mother-of-two Ali Pate has led the development of the proposals to open Holme Head School since early last year.

She was disheartened at being unable to find a suitable place for her own children and started exploring alternative forms of schooling.

Now working with education experts in Nottingham, they have devised the WHISKids school model which they say could be replicated elsewhere.
Carlisle and Nottingham are set to be the first two places to open such a school, once a formal application to create the independent schools is granted by the Department for Education.

The schools would be independent but those behind the plans want them to be affordable for families and therefore have designed a new financial model which they hope will meet their aim.

Mrs Pate, in an update to supporters, said: "We strongly feel that fees do not fit within the school's ethos, and should not be a necessity for pupils from all walks of life to access an alternative education option.

"We are now at the stage where we have an amazing building, an incredible curriculum, pupils for the next three years minimum and absolutely outstanding staff applicants. Money is our final hurdle."

She says the Carlisle school needs at least £200,000 a year to run.

Some funds would come from the Department for Education and income from before and after school clubs but a significant proportion is still needed.

Leaders believe regular business sponsorship or donations, possibly £500-£1,000 a month, is the answer and would provide the security needed to pay staff.

"If we cannot find this funding, we simply will not be able to open this year and will have to delay the process," said Mrs Pate, who is willing to meet business representatives to discuss the plans further.
