Two degree apprentices have delivered a hands-on training facility for students at their former college.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure apprentices Lyla Chandler and Ellie Telford led the delivery of the project at Energy Coast University Technical College (UTC) in Lillyhall, West Cumbria, managing a multidisciplinary team and coordinating supply chain partners to create the new structure.

Lyla said: "The project was an opportunity to gain valuable project management skills and experience so early on in our careers whilst providing something beneficial to many students at the college.

"We hope the project inspires the younger generation to move into a STEM role beyond their secondary education."

The facility, built within a workshop at the UTC, is designed to give students practical experience in construction and deconstruction as part of their studies.

It features pad foundations, a steel frame, timber framing, wall and roof cladding, brick and blockwork, and electrical installations.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure apprentices supported the project across planning, health and safety, quantity surveying, electrical and civil engineering.

The project first took shape when the college approached long-standing partners Morgan Sindall Infrastructure for support to develop a training resource that would help students to understand the skills, standards and teamwork needed for the workplace.

Eldon Garnett, managing director – nuclear at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, said: "The success of Ellie and Lyla, who progressed from UTC students to degree apprentices with us, shows the power of connecting classroom learning with real industry experience."

Energy Coast UTC vice principal Simon Richardson praised the pair’s contribution to the project and their professional approach.
