A WHITEHAVEN snooker and pool hall could be converted into what is described as a multi-activity indoor entertainment venue if the plans are approved by Cumberland Council.

The application from SK Leisure is for The Rackshack in Swingpump Lane and, according to the statement of proposed use document, 10 pin bowling lanes are proposed as the initial main addition to what is currently in place.

It states it could also offer activities which could be added or removed in the future including: duckpin bowling, crazy indoor golf, pool and snooker, smart darts, table tennis, a gaming arcade and shuffleboard. It adds: “This list is not exhaustive and other activities could be added as different activities become popular.”

According to the report the main building changes would include that the single toilet at the rear of the property will be removed as there are large gents and ladies toilets and there is also a disabled toilet on the ground floor.

It states: “The walls for the snooker room will be taken down and new partition walls will be installed between the columns.

“This will give a separate room on the north side of the building that will be used as a snooker room but this could be changed in the future to cover the activities above.

“This will then open up the south side of the building, so that it can be used for activities that require a large open area, the initial proposal is that six 10-pin bowling lanes will be installed but this could be used for other activities in the future.

“The area east of line X will remain the same with the bar, kitchen and cellar and pool and darts areas staying as they are.”

According to the report the existing fire detection system will be modified in line with an updated fire risk assessment to give the required coverage for the modified areas although these modifications were not expected to be significant. It adds: “The bowling lanes are built on top of the existing concrete floor, approximately 40cm higher than the ground floor.”
