A care home has brought a taste of South Africa to Cumbria in a celebration filled with music, food, and joyful memories.
Newlands Care Centre in Workington designed the event for resident Claudia, who was born and raised in South Africa.
Head of activities Nyoni and colleague Fiso surprised her with a traditional South African welcome, complete with ululating, dancing, and vibrant cultural regalia.
The celebration included a meal of pap, kale, wors (South African sausage), and chakalaka.
Claudia was visibly moved by the gesture, telling staff: "This is how my mama used to make it."
Kim Whelan, manager at Newlands Care Centre, said: "It was absolutely wonderful to see Claudia’s reaction.
"When she said the food reminded her of how her mama used to make it, it really brought home just how meaningful these moments can be.
"We want our residents to feel that their history, culture and memories are valued and celebrated here at Newlands."
The day was a chance to honour Claudia’s life story and the traditions that shaped her.
Music from South African legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo played throughout, adding to the atmosphere.
Even the care home’s management team joined in, setting aside cutlery to enjoy the meal the traditional way.
Ms Whelan said: "It wasn’t simply about preparing a South African meal.
"It was about creating a moment where Claudia could reconnect with a part of her identity and share that joy with everyone around her.
"Seeing her smiling, dancing and enjoying the music was absolutely priceless."
Claudia enjoyed the afternoon so much that she was reluctant to return to her room afterward.
For staff at Newlands, the day was a reminder that meaningful care is often found in the smallest details, whether it’s a familiar dish, a favourite song, or a traditional dance.
The team believes that celebrating life means honouring the whole person—their memories, heritage, and the things that bring them joy.
On this occasion, that meant bringing a piece of South Africa to West Cumbria.
Newlands Care Centre is part of Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers.
The centre offers nursing care, dementia care, and respite care.
