Claire's Bakery in Carlisle makes Best Bakery finals

Claire’s Bakery, on Warwick Road, has been named among the finalists in the 2026 awards, adding to what is already a special month for owner Claire Armitage and her daughter, Lil Todhunter, who run the business together.

The bakery is marking its 15th anniversary this month, a milestone Claire says makes her immensely proud.

Speaking about the recognition, Claire said the support of customers has played a huge role in the bakery’s success over the years.

“We’ve actually been in business for 15 years this month, which is something we’re immensely proud of,” she said. “It’s just myself and my daughter that run the shop and we love being here. It’s been amazing seeing how the shop has changed and progressed over the past 15 years.”

Known for its traditional homemade food and friendly service, the bakery has built up a loyal customer base. Claire revealed that some of the best-selling items are often the simplest.

“Our most popular options on the menu are always the simple ones,” she said. “Bacon rolls, ham salad baguettes and school cake."

Alongside its day-to-day bakery offerings, the business also provides outside catering, with afternoon teas proving particularly popular for special occasions.

“We do a lot of celebration cakes and cupcakes to pre-order too,” Claire said. “We do a lot of gluten-free celebration cakes in particular.”

The business’s story began after an opportunity arose close to home. Having already worked in the catering industry, Claire said opening the bakery felt like the natural next step.

“We were already in the catering industry before we opened the shop but when the building came up, right on our doorstep, it felt like the perfect opportunity,” she said.

Having lived on Warwick Road for more than 35 years, Claire says being part of the local community remains one of the most rewarding aspects of running the bakery.

“It’s very popular in the community,” she said. “It’s lovely being able to be so involved with our own community on a daily basis. We have lots of wonderful regulars who always keep us entertained. Their support always means the world to us.”

Claire’s Bakery also regularly keeps customers updated through its Facebook and Instagram pages, where it showcases cakes, catering options and daily specials.

Reflecting on reaching the Best Bakery final, Claire added: “It really does mean a lot to us and we are very appreciative.”
