A MUSEUM is inviting visitors to step back in time and explore the stories and industries that shaped its community.

The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven has launched a 10-day Heritage Week programme running from September 11 to 20, designed to celebrate West Cumbria’s rich history through a packed schedule of talks, workshops, and hands-on activities for all ages.

Councillor Anne Quilter, executive member for vibrant and healthy places at Cumberland Council, said: "Whitehaven has a remarkable story to tell, and Heritage Week is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on the people, industries, and traditions that have shaped the area over the centuries.

"From discovering more about the maritime past to exploring family history and getting hands-on with objects from the past, there are plenty of opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with local heritage and learn something new."

Highlights include a forensic archaeology workshop for children on Saturday, September 12, offering a chance to uncover clues from the past and learn about archaeological investigation.

On Tuesday, September 15, the Not Only a Coal Town Walk & Talk will explore the town’s lesser-known industries, including shipbuilding, whaling, pottery, and tobacco.

Heritage Pop-Up Talks led by museum volunteers will take place throughout the day on Thursday, September 17, bringing history to life with stories and facts from the museum’s collections.

The popular Beakid programme will host a Viking Workshop on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, giving families the opportunity to discover more about Viking life through fun and interactive activities.

Visitors can also meet family history expert Bry Cooper on September 19 for free advice sessions on tracing ancestry.

Heather Holmes, customer and visitor experience manager, said: "We want the Beacon Museum to be a place where people feel they can explore, ask questions, and discover something they may have not known about the area they live in.

"I hope Heritage Week encourages both our community and visitors to come through our doors, take part, and enjoy discovering more about Whitehaven's fascinating past."

Hands-on history sessions will also run over the final weekend, linked to the museum’s Carboniferous Monsters exhibition.

Full event details and booking information are available on the Beacon Museum’s website and social media channels.
