A yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for Cumbria today, with forecasters warning of possible flooding, travel disruption and power cuts.
The Met Office warning is in force from 11am until 11.59pm tonight (Sunday, August 30), as heavy showers and thunderstorms sweep across the UK.
Areas hit by the strongest downpours could see 10-15mm of rain fall in less than an hour, while some locations may receive 30-40mm over several hours.
The larger totals are "most likely for parts of north and northwest England and southwest Scotland."
Forecasters said there is a risk of flooding to some homes and businesses, as well as difficult driving conditions caused by "spray, standing water and/or hail."
Delays to rail services are also possible.
The Met Office warned that lightning could cause damage to a small number of buildings and structures, while short-term power cuts and interruptions to other services are "likely."
A Met Office spokesman said: "Showers, heavy and thundery, will reach southwest England and Wales later Sunday morning, before spreading and developing more widely during the afternoon.
"Hail, frequent lightning and, in southern parts of England and Wales, wind gusts of 35-45 mph will be additional hazards.
"Heaviest showers and thunderstorms will become more isolated later in the evening."
