A cosy pub in the North Pennines has been named one of the best in Britain.

The Mirror has released a list of the top 50 pubs in the Britain that it has compiled with the National Pub and Bar Awards.

The list features pubs from across all parts of Britain with a selection of gastropubs to locals that have been around longer than many of their residents.

The Cumberland Inn in the town of Alston made it onto the list thanks to its "friendly staff" and "welcoming" atmosphere.

On the pub, The Mirror said: "A 19th-century inn on Townfoot at the foot of Alston’s steep Front Street, in England’s highest market town.

"Owners Guy and Helen Harmer have run it since 2002, having previously run a pair of 70ft hotel narrowboats."

The Cumberland Inn is "perfectly situated" in the North Pennines for those wanting to explore the local area.

Whether you need somewhere to call home for a bit while exploring the surrounding countryside or a spot during a hike, the pub could be a great place.

The pub has five bedrooms with ensuites that are perfect for a good night’s sleep before setting off on a long walk.

The pub offers "freshly prepared" food with breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and bar meals available.

The evening menu offers a range of classic dishes such as pies, burgers, breaded scampi, and a whole separate curry menu.

The dessert menu also features lots of familiar favourites from sticky toffee pudding to an apple and raspberry crumble.

One reviewer said: "We visited Alston for a week and visited the Cumberland twice.

"Food great, good value and decent portions.
