A west Cumbrian rugby league club is hosting a charity match this weekend in aid of two causes pertinent to the area and sport.
Workington Town RLC will play Keighley Cougars at Derwent Park on Sunday, July 26, as part of a wider fundraising day for Every Life Matters and The Steve Prescott Foundation.
The money raised for Every Life Matters will go to an initiative of theirs called Cumbria United Against Suicide.
According to the Every Life Matters website, this scheme is: “A county-wide project uniting sports clubs, coaches, and athletes from all sports to take a stand against suicide.
“The campaign uses the power of sport — teamwork, community, and solidarity — to reduce the stigma around suicide and open up life-saving conversations.”
In creating and running this initiative, the charity has partnered with Cumberland Council, Active Cumbria, and TDA (The Decommissioning Alliance).
The Steve Prescott Foundation was established in 2007 by a former professional rugby league international, following his diagnosis with a rare abdominal cancer called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP).
Although he passed away in 2013, Steve’s foundation continues his legacy by funding such areas as: The Christie Hospital in Manchester, Rugby League Benevolent Fund (supporting the rugby league community in times of need), and SPF Special Causes Fund (funding research into PMP).
The match kicks off at 3.00pm, with the gates opening at 12.30pm.
£1 of every ticket, and 10p of every pint sold goes directly to the charities.
Replica charity shirts are available for purchase on the day.
Benny Westwood (a Warrington Wolves legend) and Tommy Martyn (a St Helens stalwart) will be speaking in the fan zone marquee at around 2.20pm.
Singer Alex Buchanan will be taking the stage at 5.00pm to entertain fans.
