OUTDOOR clothing and equipment retailer GO Outdoors has named its top 10 most impressive waterfalls in the UK, naming a Lake District feature at number six.
Aira Force, near Ullswater, was named the sixth best waterfall to visit in the UK, beaten to the top spot by High Force in County Durham.
The outdoor experts also named the Falls of Glomach in Ross-shire in second place; Pistyll Rhaeadr in Powys in third place and Steall Falls in Glen Nevis in fourth place.
Hardraw Force in the Yorkshire Dales took fifth place.
The beloved Aira Force was an 18th century pleasure ground and remains an extremely popular visitor spot.
A visually arresting scene, the 65 foot waterfall inspired William Wordsworth's gothic poem Somnambulist.
It recounts a tale from Cumbrian folklore: the tragedy of Lady Emma and Sir Eglamore.
Lady Emma was so devastated when Sir Eglamore went to war that her sleep was disrupted by sleepwalking and night terrors.
Sleepwalking, she made her way to the top of Aira Force, just as Sir Eglamore returned home.
Waking up to see Sir Eglamore in front of her, startled by what she believed to be a ghostly vision, she stumbled backwards over the edge, falling down the waterfall to her death.
Aira Force can be accessed with a short walk from its National Trust car park.
