Robotic dogs and live science demos were among the highlights of Whitehaven’s fifth annual science fair.

Hosted in St Nicholas Gardens, the event was a collaboration between Whitehaven Town Council and Sellafield.

Tracey West from Sellafield said: "It was fantastic to see so many young people so engaged in science.

"The theatre show, with its live demonstrations, really brought the subject to life, you could feel the excitement in the room as pupils got involved alongside their teachers.

"Our team at Sellafield were proud to be part of it, especially with Spot, our robotic dog, which was an instant hit with the children.

"Experiences like this show just how powerful hands-on learning can be in inspiring the next generation."

A dedicated theatre space featured four "whacky" science shows for primary school pupils, as well as the robotic dogs and other science exhibits.

Deputy Lieutenant Gerard Richardson, a member of the events sub-committee, praised the organisers.

Mr Richardson said: "Despite the heat, the show went on and Id particularly like to commend all the team who made this happen and the schools who supported it.

"I would particularly like to praise Sellafields Chris Ballard whose enthusiasm for Science is only matched by his passion for Whitehaven and Marlene Jewell the Council clerk who embraced events when she started with the town council despite them not being in the job description.

"Without people like her and Chris, these events would never happen."

Organisers say plans are now being made for next years event.
