A scenic walking route in Cumbria has been shortlisted in a national competition.
The Buttermere circular route is in the running to be named Britain’s Favourite Path 2026 as part of a public vote organised by walking charity The Ramblers.
The finalist was selected in the third edition of the competition and represents the North West of England among eight regional contenders.
It was put forward by walking enthusiast Stephen Ward.
Mr Ward said: "This is the path that circumscribes the lake of Buttermere.
"I think it is one of the most beautiful places in the world and can understand why Alfred Wainwright did too.
"It’s a place to go when your mind is racing, to let the rugged beauty overwhelm your senses, and calm you down.
"And, at just over four miles, it is a relatively easy route."
People from across Britain submitted nominations detailing their favourite walks earlier this year, including personal memories, photos, and stories about how these paths have shaped their lives.
The competition aims to celebrate the paths that help people explore the outdoors, find peace, and reconnect with nature.
A panel of judges including presenter and Postcode Lottery ambassador Matt Johnson, singer and presenter JB Gill, and Ramblers president Amar Latif narrowed the field down to eight paths—one from each region of Britain.
Judges considered both the scenic qualities and the emotional stories behind each nomination.
Mr Johnson said: "It was really, really difficult to narrow it down, to be honest.
"These are all incredible examples of how beautiful the paths across our wonderful countries are.
"And now I’m a proud owner of a substantial list of paths to explore and tick off for the rest of my life."
Mr Gill said: "I have loved seeing people’s favourite paths in postcodes across the UK, and after lots of deliberation, we’ve whittled it down to the final eight.
"So now it’s over to the public to cast their votes."
The final decision now rests with the public.
Voting is open until 11pm on July 31 via the Ramblers website at www.ramblers.org.uk/competition.
The path with the most votes will be named Britain's Favourite Path 2026.
