Sellafield is one of West Cumbria’s anchor employers, with about 11,000 people working on the nuclear clean-up and related projects on the coast near Seascale. For local residents and those considering a move to the area, it is a major source of skilled, technical and support roles across engineering, science, IT and business functions.
Most posts are advertised through the company’s own careers website, and candidates follow a structured process that includes an online application, assessment, security checks and a medical before any start date is confirmed.
How to get a job at Sellafield
Sellafield is one of the largest single employers in the north of England, with roughly 11,000 people working directly for Sellafield Ltd on the West Cumbrian coast. When contractors and supply chain businesses are included, the site supports more than 58,000 jobs across the region. For anyone living in Cumbria — or considering moving here — understanding how the company recruits is worth the effort.

What kind of jobs are available?
The site's core mission is the decommissioning and clean-up of Britain's largest nuclear facility, a programme that is expected to last well into the next century. That scale of work requires an unusually broad mix of skills. Sellafield Ltd actively recruits engineers of most disciplines — chemical, civil, process, design and nuclear — alongside physicists, laboratory analysts, project managers, IT system architects, cyber security analysts, and business analysts. The company also employs large numbers of people in operational, administrative and support roles.
Positions are advertised on the Sellafield Ltd careers website at careers.sellafieldsite.co.uk/vacancies. Applications cannot be submitted through third-party recruitment sites; all candidates must apply through the official portal.
The application process
For most roles, the process runs to six stages:
Application form — candidates complete an online form covering education, employment history and relevant experience.
Online assessment — those who meet the entry requirements are invited to complete a Strength and Values assessment, which must be finished within five working days of receiving the link.
Conditional offer — a successful assessment leads to a conditional offer. Sellafield Ltd advises candidates not to resign from any existing employment at this point.
Security clearance — all employees must hold security clearance. The minimum level for site access is a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS); higher-clearance roles require Security Check (SC) level clearance, which involves a more detailed background investigation. Once paperwork is submitted, the process takes a minimum of two weeks.
Medical — a medical assessment is required. Sellafield Ltd advises candidates to book the earliest available appointment, as results can also take a minimum of two weeks.
Unconditional offer and start date — once clearance and the medical are complete, a confirmed offer is made.
Entry requirements
For most roles, Sellafield Ltd asks for a minimum of GCSE grade C (grade 4) or above in Mathematics, English and Science, or equivalent qualifications. Individual vacancies may require additional qualifications, and full details are set out in each job listing.

Graduates
Sellafield Ltd runs an annual graduate programme based in West Cumbria, with design engineering roles also available in Warrington. The programme lasts two years and is cohort-based, with a start date in late September or early October each year.
The starting salary for graduates is £42,248, rising to £43,198 in the second year. On successful completion, graduates move onto a permanent contract, subject to a suitable vacancy being available.
The application process for graduates includes two additional stages: a strength-based video interview and an in-person assessment centre held in Cumbria or Warrington, which involves paired and individual exercises, a technical interview, and a technical presentation.
Graduates relocating from more than 30 miles away are eligible for a £1,400 relocation allowance, plus an interest-free loan of £2,000 repaid through monthly salary.
Apprenticeships
Sellafield Ltd runs 16 apprenticeship schemes — seven for GCSE-level apprentices and nine degree apprenticeships. Most standard apprenticeships require a minimum of three GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in Mathematics, English and a science or engineering subject. Degree apprenticeships require at least five GCSEs at the same level, including Mathematics, English Language and one science or engineering subject.
There is no upper age limit for apprenticeship applications. All schemes begin in early September as part of a cohort intake. On successful completion, Sellafield Ltd states it will look to move apprentices into a permanent role, subject to business requirements.

Applications for both apprenticeship and graduate programmes open in the months before the September start date. The company posted on social media in November 2025 that applications for its 2026 intake, including apprenticeships, degree apprenticeships, internships and graduate placements, were "launching soon".
Pay and benefits
Beyond salary, Sellafield Ltd's published benefits package includes 30 days of annual leave plus eight bank holidays, with the option to buy an additional 2.5 days or carry over up to 10 days.
The pension scheme is employer-matched on a sliding scale: if an employee contributes 3%, the company pays in 8%; if an employee pays in 7% or more, the employer contribution rises to 13.5%.
An annual bonus of up to £4,000 applies to band 5 roles. Employees in band 4 are eligible for a bonus of up to 10% of salary, and those in band 3 up to 15%, based on a combination of personal and company targets.
Additional benefits include a cycle-to-work scheme, an employee wellbeing programme including a digital GP service and mental health support, and access to the Sellafield and Associated Sites Recreation Association (SASRA), which offers discounts, day trips and a monthly cash prize draw.
Tips from the recruitment team
The NDA — the public body that owns Sellafield Ltd — has published advice for applicants to the apprenticeship scheme. Its guidance recommends researching the specific scheme being applied for, tailoring answers to each individual application rather than copying responses across multiple schemes, and allowing more time than expected to complete the form. It also advises drafting answers offline and asking someone else to review the application before submission.
