A BUS operator has clarified that a break down that occurred on London Road yesterday was not a fire, it was simply a "mechanical issue."

London Road, Carlisle was closed by Cumbria Police early on Monday morning when a bus broke down and smoke was reported.

A spokesperson for Stagecoach Cumbria and Lancashire said: "We can confirm that there was no fire involving one of our buses on London Road in Carlisle.

"But there was a minor incident involving a mechanical issue.

"As a precaution, emergency services attended the scene and the road was temporarily closed," they said.

"Our engineers quickly assessed the vehicle and were able to move it safely, with the road subsequently reopening."

A spokesperson for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that its firefighters from Carlisle East and Carlisle West stations attended the bus break down, due to the reports of smoke.

They said: "Firefighters used a hose reel jet on the rear brakes of the vehicle before handing over to Stagecoach and Cumbria Police, who were in attendance to assist with traffic management."

Fire crews were initially mobilised at 7.30am to the report of smoke coming from the back of the bus.
