A Cumbrian guest house owner has shared her approach to overcoming challenges in the hospitality industry.
Sue Grundy, who runs Brooklands Guest House in Penrith and recently won Channel 4’s Four in a Bed, spoke about her journey after her appearance on the show.
She said: "It couldn’t have gone any better, to be fair."
Ms Grundy competed solo in the competition and believes her appearance has helped boost the guest house’s profile.
Her win comes at a difficult time for the industry, which faces rising costs and staff shortages, with around 77,000 hospitality vacancies recorded between September and November 2025.
To stay competitive, Ms Grundy has adjusted her business strategy and credited financial backing from the Cumberland Building Society for helping her adapt.
She said: "It has been a bit tricky with the way the economy is at the minute.
"Everything globally has an effect on your business."
With guests becoming more price-conscious, she now caps room rates below £100.
She said: "You’re not going to pay your mortgage if your rooms are empty."
This change has led to increased bookings during the typically quieter winter months.
Ms Grundy has also focused on creating 'experience-led' stays, such as murder mystery weekends, and built partnerships with various activity providers.
She works with businesses offering walking, cycling, and paddleboarding to appeal to a broader range of guests.
Recognising the demand for active breaks, she’s installed secure bike storage.
She has also embraced digital tools and AI to streamline certain administrative tasks.
The Cumberland has supported Ms Grundy since she acquired Brooklands Guest House in 2023.
She said: "They’ve been brilliant.
"There’s always somebody at the end of the phone if I need any help and they’ve supported me throughout in making Brooklands Guest House a success."
Mr McKerracher said: "Over the years the hospitality sector has faced significant challenges and continues to do so.
"It is those businesses who think outside the box, diversify their approach, and adapt to meet and exceed customer expectations will succeed.
"Sue’s journey at Brooklands Guest House is a perfect example of how hospitality businesses can adapt by focusing on customer experience, embracing innovation and making smart commercial decisions.
"At The Cumberland, we pride ourselves on building strong relationships with our customers, offering the support and guidance they need to thrive and we’re so pleased to have supported Sue to make Brooklands Guest House a success."
