FROM mountain marathons to medieval jousting, May is when the Lake District's events calendar really hits its stride.
Whether you fancy live music on the shores of Derwentwater, a family‑friendly countryside show or a serious trail‑running challenge, there is plenty on offer across Cumbria this month.
We've picked out some of the most interesting things happening after May 11 in and around the Lake District, from big‑name festivals to quieter, more unusual experiences, to help you plan a day out.
What's on in the Lake District in May 2026
Keswick Mountain Festival
May 15-17, 2026 - Keswick and Derwentwater
Billed as a full‑on celebration of outdoor life, Keswick Mountain Festival packs three days with sports events, live bands, talks and a bustling festival village on the edge of Derwentwater.
Runners, swimmers and cyclists can sign up for everything from 5k trail runs to open‑water swims and triathlons, while non‑competitors can soak up the atmosphere, browse outdoor brands and enjoy the food and drink on site.
Medieval Muncaster
May 23-31, 2026 - Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass
Muncaster Castle leans into its history later in the month with a full medieval takeover, complete with costumed re‑enactors and arena displays.
Expect mock battles and jousting, have‑a‑go archery and axe‑throwing, storytelling, birds of prey and living‑history encampments in the castle grounds.
It's pitched firmly at families, but there is plenty of detail to keep history buffs interested as well.
Country Fest
May 30-31, 2026 - Westmorland County Showground, Crooklands
Just outside the Lake District, near Kendal, Country Fest brings a slice of traditional rural life to the Westmorland Showground, with livestock, arena displays, and a strong emphasis on local food and drink.
Alongside stalls and demos, you'll find children's activities and entertainment, making it an easy day out for families looking for something a bit different from the lakeshore crowds.
Lake District Running Festival
May 29-31, 2026 - Grasmere area
For runners, late May also brings the Lake District Running Festival, a collaboration between the long‑running Grasmere Gallop and the Original Mountain Marathon.
Over one weekend, you can choose from short, family‑friendly runs, classic 10k and half‑marathon‑style routes, right up to tougher trail distances, plus navigation‑based 'trail quest' events and even kids' races.
Walk & Talk at Wray
Selected dates in May - Wray Castle estate, near Ambleside
If you prefer something gentler, Wray's guided 'Walk & Talk' tours offer a short, structured wander through the estate overlooking Windermere.
Visitors join a member of the team for around 45 minutes, pausing at key spots to hear how the Dawson family shaped the grounds, hear about notable guests and find out what's planned for the site's future.
The tours run on set afternoons through May, with extra dates during half‑term, and are a handy way to get your bearings before heading off on one of Wray's waymarked trails.
Wild Sauna & Forest Plunge, Whinlatter
May 17, 2026 - Whinlatter Forest, near Keswick
For something completely different, there's a 'Wild Sauna & Forest Plunge' session in Whinlatter Forest on Sunday 17 May, blending a wood‑fired sauna tucked among the trees with optional cold‑water dips.
The experience is designed as a slow, small‑group session where people move between heat, cool mountain air and forest water, with an emphasis on switching off and reconnecting with the landscape.
You'll need to bring swimwear, a towel and warm layers, and be prepared for a short walk from the main car park to the tucked‑away sauna spot.
