Park End Shelter re-opens in Vulcan Park, Workington

The Park End Shelter in Vulcan Park was re-opened to the public after a successful restoration by Workington Town Council.

People gathered at the historic building on Wednesday, April 8 with Workington mayor David Farrar cutting the ribbon to open the community space to groups across the town.

The re-opening also marked the name of the building returning to its original name of Park End Shelter, after being known locally for many years as the 'Old Man's Shelter'.

Originally intended as a space for men to meet and read the newspaper, the new lease of life will see the building become a community hub, with local groups invited to use the space.

In a statement, Cllr Farrar said: "The council is delighted to have re-opened a historically important building for the community.

"The building has been in Vulcan Park since 1937 when Helena Thompson donated money for an ‘Old Man’s Shelter’ to be built - named the Park End Shelter.

"It was intended as a reading and meeting room where men could gather to read the newspaper.

"The council wanted to keep the original name as it is part of Workington’s history.

"The building has already been used by several groups, and we are looking forward to seeing it turn into a thriving community hub. The council is committed to enhancing the town and preservation of its heritage."

Community groups have already started using the new venue, with Workington Music Festival holding a meeting in the space early last week.

In a statement on the Workington Town Council Facebook page, a representative for the group said: "The room was excellent, bright, spacious working environment, clean and warm. Great to have the facilities to make a drink.

"We will certainly use this venue in the future."
