THE best chess players in Cumbria competed in the Cumbria Individual Chess Championship at Burnside Cricket Club.
The event took place between Friday, April 10 until Sunday, April 12.
The Major Section was tight with three players: Barry Hymer, Zander Booth and Alex Billings, all on equal points.
This resulted in the prize money being shared equally between them, however, Barry won on the tie break.
Barry had to play well, especially in his games against Alice Lampard and Zander Booth.
Organisers said that the standard of chess was "very high indeed."
The Minor Section was won by Alan Hiatt from Carlisle. Alan was the clear winner with Andy McAtear from Penrith the Runner Up.
Organisers said that two of the players, Ana Sofia Lozano Burnham and Zander Booth, are both still young enough to play in the Junior Chess Tournament, "so it's great to see young players doing very well against experienced senior opponents."
The Cumbria Junior Team, managed by Neill Cooper, achieved seventh place in a national monthly online tournament a few days earlier.
In the the Cumbria League, Ulverston A have won the Southern League.
The Open League is still in progress with Maryport and Penrith both on 16 points, however, Maryport has a game in hand.
