A new peer support group is launching to support young mothers in the Carlisle area.
The group, designed for mums and mums-to-be aged 16 to 25, is being launched by the Happy Mums Foundation in partnership with Cumberland Family Hubs, Together We, and Healthwatch Cumberland.
A spokesperson said the group "aims to provide a safe, judgement-free space for young women to connect, share experiences, and support one another through the unique journey of early motherhood."
Lucinda Bray, managing director of the Happy Mums Foundation, said: "We know that for younger mums, the pressure can feel immense, and the fear of being judged often prevents them from reaching out.
"Being a mum shouldn't be a journey anyone walks alone.
"There is incredible power in making connections with others who are in a similar situation; it reminds you that you are doing a great job and that your feelings are valid.
"This group is about building that community together."
To launch the initiative, the foundation is set to hold a Teen to 25 Mums Launch Day at the People First Conference Centre on Milbourne Street on Wednesday, March 18 from 10am to 2.30pm.
The event will offer young mums a chance to relax and enjoy free activities, including hand massages and bath-bomb making with Lush, professional portraits by River and Pear Photography, and various take-home goodies.
The scheme was designed in response to a recognised gap in support for young mothers in the region, where up to 40 per cent of young mums reportedly experience perinatal mental health challenges—higher than the 27 per cent reported in the general population.
A spokesperson for the group said many young women report feeling isolated or judged in traditional settings and may avoid public spaces out of fear of negative comments.
The peer group plans to meet weekly at the Newtown Family Hub every Wednesday from 1pm to 2pm, and organisers say it is co-created with input from the young mums it serves, ensuring the support offered is tailored to their needs.
Jo Hymers, maternal link worker at Together We, said: "This group is a wonderful opportunity for mums to focus on that vital bond with their baby in a relaxed environment.
"Whether it's learning about using slings to keep your little one close or simply finding the type of support that feels right for you, we are here to help you find your own path.
"We want every young mum to feel confident and supported."
The launch day is open to all mums and pregnant women aged up to 25, along with their babies and support workers or family members.
The event is free of charge and will include Lush pampering, professional photography, crafts, activities for children, and refreshments.
Family members, friends, and support workers are encouraged to bring young mums along to the event to discover the community.
