Award-winning Cumbrian hotel unveils multi-million upgrade

The Kronen Collection, which operates properties across Cumbria, has completed a multi-million-pound refurbishment programme aimed at elevating guest experience and preparing for future growth.

Improvements were made across the group, including upgrades to Waltons Bar and the entrance at The Crown Hotel in Wetheral.

All 66 bedrooms at The Kilbirnie Hotel in Newquay were fully refurbished, with enhancements also made to guest rooms and public areas at Jesmond Dene House in Newcastle and Borrowdale Gates in Keswick.

Chris McLaughlin, the group’s newly appointed chief executive officer, said: "Completing this level of investment across our portfolio while promoting experienced leaders from within the business gives us a strong platform for 2026.

"We are focused on long-term value creation, operational excellence and protecting the individual character of each of our hotels as we continue to grow."

The company has also announced a series of internal promotions to its senior leadership team.

Mr McLaughlin steps into the role of CEO after serving as general manager at The Crown Hotel in Wetheral and group operations director.

Christina Stephenson has been named group sales and marketing manager, bringing 13 years of experience from Jesmond Dene House, where she was previously sales, marketing, and events manager.

Javier Labbe has been promoted to group accountant after two years as accounts manager at The Crown Hotel.

Marlon Kagoro has been appointed hotel manager at The Crown Hotel following three years in operational roles, including food and beverage manager and operations manager.
