CARLISLE railway station’s new look has been unveiled with new plans that have been lodged with Cumberland Council’s planning department.

The application, which is for land between Water Street and James Street, requests the redevelopment of Station Road Business Park, including a new surface car park as well as a number of reserved matters related to a previously approved application.

According to a design statement the Southern Gateway/George Square development is located to the south of Carlisle Station.

It states: “The improvements to George Square create a new focal point for arrival as the Southern Gateway of Carlisle Station, as part of a broader public realm regeneration strategy, delivering several transformative projects within Carlisle, including enhancements to the train station and the creation of the new forecourt entrance Court Square, to the station’s north.

“The Southern Gateway project encompasses the development of a new station piazza space, George Square, along with increased vehicle parking provision for staff and visitors.

"This will expand parking capacity to the station’s rear, diverting most vehicular traffic from the station’s north toward the south.

“The Southern Gateway will be delivered in a Phased Strategy. In April 2025, hybrid planning permission was granted comprising full permission for public realm enhancements and creation of the new Southern Gateway at Citadel Station, and an outline permission (some matters reserved) for redevelopment of Station Road Business Park, including new surface car park.”

According to the report the existing site consists of a retail park including
Matalan and Staples, which are now demolished, and stretch of carriageway, Water Street, of which a section is being realigned during Phase 1.

It adds: “There is a large car park associated with the retail park, with a number of existing small trees. A brick free standing wall defines the boundary between the pavement on James St and the car park, in front of which is a bus stop and telecoms mast with associated cabinets. This wall also turns the corner onto Water Street and defines the current car park entrance.”

The report states that the primary design principle for the Southern Gateway is to improve access and passenger links to the south side of the station alongside improvement works to the station interior. It adds: “In addition, relocating vehicle access to the south of the station will create increase parking provision and improve vehicular access.”
