Cumbrian star Anna Nicholson has won a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships.

The Brampton athlete finished third in the shot put in New Delhi.

Nicholson, who also took bronze in the Paralympic Games last year, earned the same colour medal on the world stage on Saturday morning.

The 30-year-old threw a brilliant personal best as an effort of 9.58m propelled her onto the F35 podium ahead of Czech athlete Anna Luxova.

The Cumbrian athlete employs multiple techniques to remain relaxed on the big stage, including playing ‘I Spy’ between throws with her coach.

And she reckons those tactics firmly paid off after an ice-cool performance in the sweltering 60,000-seater Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

“I’m over the moon – I’m so happy,” she said.

“To win my first medal at the Paralympics was a dream come true, but to back that up at the World Championships is just fantastic.

“I knew it would be difficult, but I just had to believe in my training and the shape I’m in.

“I went out, relaxed and threw a PB – I’m so happy.

“I was still playing ‘I Spy’ today – I managed to stay relaxed with the techniques I used.

“Having my coach there was great as he keeps me calm – we’ve done this together for 10 years now so it’s great having someone with me.”

Gold was won by Ukraine's Mariia Pomazan with a best throw of 12.04m, with China's Wang Jun taking silver.

Nicholson is one of the co-captains of the British team in the Indian capital, with the group now sponsored by official finance partner Novuna.

She was voted in alongside two-time reigning world and Paralympic champion Dan Pembroke, with both athletes competing on the penultimate day of the championships here.

Nicholson, who works as an engineer away from the throwing circle, was roared on by fiancé Jonathan and other family members back home.

She took huge pride from leading from the front and hopes to use this as a platform for the LA 2028 Paralympics in three years’ time.

“It’s felt a bit different being captain – the team have done so well,” she added.

“Everyone’s done absolutely fantastically – to come out and represent Great Britain is amazing.

“Jonathan was watching this morning so I’m sure I’ll get a call from him very soon!

“The support from back home has been amazing, having to get up at 5am to watch it – so many people said they would so that’s fantastic.

“LA is only three years away now – I know that I’ve got a lot more in there, so I think we’re going to close on the other girls as we head towards it.”
