Three Keswick teenagers flew the flag for Cumbria at a top national athletics event – taking the county to a silver medal.

Freddie Strong, Jonah Causey and Tim Fuggle produced a superb performance at the English Schools Combined Events Final at Chelmsford.

They produced a combined score of 7,249 points – taking Cumbria to second on the podium in the junior boys team event.

Freddie, Jonah and Tim, who all attend Keswick School and are members of Border Harriers Athletic Club, competed in the under-15 boys pentathlon comprising 80m hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump and 800m.

Freddie led the way with 2,821 points, placing him the sixth athlete overall as he narrowly missed out on a place in the England team for the indoor international meeting in November.

His results included a personal best in the high jump of 1.83m, before finishing with a solid 2min 19.12secs in the 800m in windy conditions.

Jonah also produced a consistent set of results, the highlight being a personal best in the long jump at 5.27m, and coming close to his best in other events.

Tim had also set the tone with victory in his 80m hurdles heat with a PB of 13.06secs into a -1.5 wind. He also produced a personal best in the shot put.

Jonah was 19th and Tim 27th in the individual standings, with points tallies of 2,276 nd 2,152 respectively.

The overall Cumbrian total of 7,249 put them second behind winners Essex, and ahead of other competing counties such as Derbyshire, who came third, and Hertfordshire, Dorset and Durham.

Border Harriers’ long-serving coach John Little saluted the young Cumbrians. He said: “All three have consistently made the journey to Carlisle from Keswick to train for the pentathlon events but also other disciplines and reaped the reward of a national medal each.

“Second best county in England for three lads from the same school, same club is some achievement.”
