DROP-IN events taking place throughout September will inform residents of Copeland about a Geological Disposal Facility.

The underground nuclear waste facility is the subject of a national siting process ran by the developer, Nuclear Waste Services.

Mid Copeland and South Copeland are two areas being considered for the site which will securely house the most hazardous radioactive waste.

Mid Copeland is comprised of the Gosforth electoral ward and includes the surrounding communities such as Thornhill, Beckermet, Braystones and Seascale.

Drop-in events are taking place to give residents more information on the Geological Disposal Facility and the next steps of the siting process.

Residents of Mid Copeland can hear from the GDF team at Egremont Methodist Church on Thursday September 4; Phoenix Enterprise Centre on Friday September 5 and Whitehaven United Reform Church on Thursday September 18.

Each session runs from 11am until 3pm.

Before selection, a site must be considered which has the correct geology and a willing community, the Mid Copeland GDF Community Partnership has formed to discuss the facility with the public and ensure residents understand the siting process.
