A WHITEHAVEN Rugby League player has been suspended ‘with immediate effect’ following an incident at the weekend.

The club announced that Dion Aiye had been given the suspension while an investigation was carried out but declined to comment further.

A statement published by Whitehaven Rugby League said: “Following an incident over the weekend the board of directors can confirm they have suspended Dion Aiye with immediate effect from carrying out his role at the club pending further investigation.

“The club will not be making any further comment at this time.”

Aiye was convicted of assaulting and harassing his ex-partner earlier this year but the club stood by him and he was named in the Whitehaven squad just days after being sentenced at Preston Crown Court.

The 35-year-old was branded ‘an entitled bully’ by a judge after the court heard Aiye had kicked his former girlfriend in the stomach and held her by the throat, leaving her in fear for her life.
