A woman was taken to hospital after injuring her ankle while on a walk, mountain rescuers said.

It happened on a walk on Barrow Fell in Keswick yesterday (May 25), when Keswick Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) were called out at 9.08am.

They said the woman, 64, slipped and injured her ankle and, unable to continue, called 999 for a rescue.

KMRT approached from Braithwaite and gave the woman some strong analgesia before reducing and splinting her ankle.

She was then stretchered down where an ambulance was waiting to take her to hospital.

The callout involved 17 team members and took two hours and 12 minutes.
