THE team at Carlisle Cathedral have recently added a bug hotel to the Cathedral grounds, to support and encourage the wildlife found on site.

The bug hotel was built by Jordan Morton, the property and estates manager, and has been placed along Dean's Walk on the eastern side to the Fratry Hall. This area of the precinct features flower borders which are currently in full bloom.

Bird boxes have also been added to other parts of the precinct, with the aim of providing shelter and protection for our local bird population.

The addition of the bug hotel and bird boxes to the precinct forms part of the cathedral's activities towards reaching the Silver Eco Church award, an A Rocha UK initiative.

The Cathedral gained Bronze status in December 2023, following the analysis and subsequent improvements of its practices through worship and teaching, the management of buildings and land, community and global engagement and lifestyle choices.

The cathedral is delighted to be continuing this work in 2024, and aims to achieve the Silver award by summer 2024.

The bug hotel's launch coincided with World Bee Day, which was celebrated at Carlisle railway station earlier this week.
