THIS week people across the world will be acknowledging Africa Day.

Held on May 25, it is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity on May 25, 1963.

It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent as well as around the world. The organisation was replaced by the African Union on July 9, 2002, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on May, 25.

Themes are set for each year's Africa Day, with 2015's being the 'Year of Women's Empowerment and Development towards Africa's Agenda 2063'.

There a various ways that people celebrate Africa Day, one in particular is visiting museums and galleries.

Whilst there are hundreds in Africa itself, there are many others in countries all over the world that acknowledge the continent of Africa and its rich heritage.

Other ways to acknowledge the celebration is to learn more about the communities in Africa.

There are so many cities and villages spread across the vast continent making it an area so rich in diversity and historic culture.

Many African communities are known for their creative expression, so it is fascinating to explore some of the art work and designs which illustrate the area, some of which date back centuries.

These photos show how people in Cumbria have acknowledged Africa either by celebrating the culture or offering financial aid.

We can see people enjoying African food at a school in Workington, an Africa Day being held at a school in Carlisle, different groups of people fundraising for African appeal charities, and a nursery hosting an Africa Day.
