Annan Athletic have announced Wullie Gibson as their new manager.

The veteran player takes the reins after Peter Murphy's departure to Queen of the South.

Gibson, himself a former Queens boss, will be charged with building on Murphy's good work at Galabank.

It is the club's first managerial change in seven years with Gibson, 39, stepping up after a year-and-a-half on the playing books at Annan.

Annan, in a statement, said: "After an impressive couple of seasons as a player at Galabank, Gibson has now impressed the board with his interview for the managers' position.

"Wullie has previously managed Queen of the South before moving to Galabank to continue his playing career and already has great knowledge of the club and the current group of players."

Dumfries-born Gibson managed Queens from February to December 2022 in a player-boss capacity.

After departing the Doonhamers, for whom he had played in three different spells, he was snapped up by Murphy and played an influential part in Annan's 2022/23 promotion to Scottish League One and their survival in 2023/24.

After retaining their third-tier status, Annan then saw the departure of Murphy, plus assistant Colin McMenamin and goalkeeping coach Jon Connolly, to Palmerston Park.

Queens and Annan finished seventh and eighth respectively last season.

One member of the Annan squad has confirmed his departure, meanwhile.

Midfielder Dominic Docherty has left Galabank and joined Clyde.

The 26-year-old former Queens Park and Stirling Albion man departs after three seasons with Annan.
