IN this edition of nostalgia, we are looking back at photos of Carlisle’s very own swimming Olympian, Wendy Burrell and her achievements.
Wendy Burrell was born on May 16 1952. She competed in three events at the 1968 Summer Olympics. In the medley relay she competed with Margaret Auton, Dorothy Harrison and Alexandra Jackson and they came sixth.
She represented England in the backstroke and medley events, at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. At the ASA National British Championships she won the 110 yards backstroke title in 1968 and the 200 metres backstroke title twice both in 1968 and 1970.
The pictures show several different memories of that year that Wendy competed. One photo shows Wendy's mother Barbara Burrell, with her eight year old daughter Deborah at Skiddaw Road in Carlisle, checking through the Olympics swimming timetable in 1968 to see when her eldest daughter Wendy will be competing.
