Whitehaven ship-shapers help keep the town centre tidy

Whitehaven Ship-Shapers partnered with Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project to begin adding updates to their murals and weeding the town centre on Sunday (April 28).

The murals were first done in 2021 when Lara Schwab orchestrated the mission and worked with the Harbour Youth Project on the paintings. Morrisons funded the flowers and the Harbour Commissioners funded the paint. The ship-shapers cleared the area to make way for the murals.

However, the time came to give it a refresh, Lara said: "Since we done the mural, as much as the kids done a good job,  we wanted to give it a tidy and we picked this opportunity to use the new paints we have got to add details and character to the mural.”

Ship-shapers missing is to help tidy up Whitehaven town centre, Lara said: " We do anything we can do by collaborating with people and businesses in town to do projects to make the town tidy and present it better.

"The creative opportunities like this are great and working with the Harbour Youth Project really helps with the creative project.”

The ship-shapers always have ideas in the pipeline to help Whitehaven, upcoming plans include working on Coach Lane, Washington Square mural, replacing boat planters in partnership with Forth Engineering and adding another mural to town which will include a row of books by local authors.
