A CARLISLE primary school is celebrating after being rated Good by Ofsted.

Inspectors rated Caldew Lea Primary School in March this year, with two of the inspection categories, 'behaviour and attitude and personal development', classed as Outstanding.

The school, on Ashley Street, has been on an upward trajectory since becoming part of Cumbria Education Trust in 2019. It has improved upon a rating of inadequate in 2018.

The 300-pupil school has seen an influx of new families and developed a strong focus on school improvement and outcomes for pupils.

Ofsted noted exceptional responses to the school's heightened achievement expectations from all pupils, especially those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The inspector's report highlighted several key points.

They found that students 'flourish', engaging kindly with peers and adults in a supportive school environment.

Moreover, pupils have access to a vast array of activities that enhance their wider development.

Staff ably use their subject knowledge to identify and bridge any learning gaps pupils may encounter.

"Pupils flourish at this school," the report reads.

"They speak kindly to each other and to the adults in school who care for them well.

"Pupils contribute significantly to the school’s calm and welcoming atmosphere. They care deeply for each other.

"They take great pride in behaving well, pupils are happy," it states.

Headteacher Ayesha Weston said: “We have dedicated ourselves to improving the life chances of our amazing children, and the outcomes from the inspection speak for themselves.

“We are absolutely delighted by these well-earned ratings, which demonstrate the remarkable strides our school has taken in providing a nurturing, enriching and secure environment for our children, families and staff.”

CET’s Chief Executive Lorrayne Hughes said: “I am delighted with these much-deserved results at Caldew Lea and I am delighted for Ayesha and her team receiving an official recognition of all of their hard work.”
