IN this edition of nostalgia, we are looking back at the year 1966, and looking back at the successes of Cumbrians.
Mention of that year brings one thing to mind for most English football fans. It was the year England beat West Germany 4–2 to win the 1966 World Cup at Wembley in a game which attracted an all-time record UK television audience of more than 32 million.
Meanwhile The Marquess of Bath, in conjunction with Jimmy Chipperfield, opened Longleat Safari Park, with “the lions of Longleat”, at his Longleat House, the first such drive-through safari park outside Africa. Other firsts for 1966 was a regular hovercraft service which began over the English Channel and Barclays introduced the Barclaycard, the first British credit card.
The pictures in this collection show the successes of our residents from fire rescue to business advancements.
