Police are investigating after graffiti was found on Brougham Castle, near Penrith.
It is believed to have happened on February 24.
A spokesperson from Cumbria Police said: "It will need specialist treatment to remove the graffiti due to the age of the stonework.
"Officers are appealing for information.
