A Brampton school's chess club is set to hold its first competitive event after a surge in interest. 

William Howard School's Chess club takes place every Wednesday and has recently seen its popularity boom with students from different year groups getting involved. 

News and Star: Thanks to the surge in interest in the school's Chess club, Jim Connolly, who runs the club has been able to create an intra-school championship. 

He said: "There have been so many that we have been able to launch a Chess Cup for the first time and over the last few weeks students from every year group have been competing each Wednesday.

News and Star: "After Easter, the group matches will be completed and we will move into the final play-offs with the champion being announced at the end of April."
