CREWS are still in attendance working with staff at a recycling plant in Workington following a fire earlier this week.

At around 2.50pm on Tuesday, March 19 eight fire engines, the aerial ladder platform, water bowser and a joint incident command unit attended a fire at the Recycling Lives facility on Isabella Road in Workington.

The fire at the recycling site involved a 25 metre squared building which housed lithium batteries, with fire services warning nearby houses to keep their windows closed at the time of the blaze.

Fire crews are still working with staff at the site, and advising members of the public to continue keeping doors and windows closed throughout the area.

In a statement, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our crews remain in attendance working with staff at Recycling Lives Ltd, Isabella Rd, Workington, following Tuesday's fire.

"Local residents/businesses may notice an amount of smoke in the vicinity so please avoid the area at present and close windows/doors."

Firefighter used four breathing apparatus, one compressed air foam system, one main jet and one medium expansion foam to extinguish the fire.

A spokesman for Recycling Lives said: "A localised fire occurred at our Workington facility yesterday evening (March 19) and was quickly brought under control.

"There were no injuries or any significant property damage thanks to the excellent work of the fire service and the enactment of our fire prevention plan.

"We thank all emergency services who attended the incident in particular Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service."

Emergency services including police were on the scene for some time, with fire appliances leaving the unit at around 10.52pm, handing the incident over to staff at the site.
