A former minister is raising money to pay for vital repairs to a church roof in Cumbria.

Nan Pryde, who worked at the Methodist church in Cleator Moor, said water is leaking through the roof of its community area.

The Reverend Pryde said: “The problem (became apparent) when people saw water coming in during the winter months.

“We were trying to get estimates for it and £8400 was the lowest we’ve received.”

The main church roof, built in 1936, is unaffected, however.

The affected roof extends over the entrance where the community meets for coffee mornings and such events.

“It’s unfortunate that it’s over these areas.

“I came to this church in 1994 and I’ve never known it to be repaired,” The Reverend Pryde said, adding that its attendance during weekly community events is between 40 and 50 people, around 30 Cub and Beaver Scouts use it weekly, as well as 30 Scouts, and up to 20 people for Sunday services, roughly.

The Reverend Pryde added: “It's dreadful, but we've been given the go-ahead that when the weather is more settled it will be sorted

“We're hoping to have it done in the next couple of months and we're fundraising ourselves for it in the church.”

At the time of writing, £10 has been raised.

The Reverend Pryde set up a fundraising website, which is accessible by clicking here.
