The 1963 assassination of President John F Kennedy sent shockwaves around the world and this remarkable picture captures the immediate aftermath of the shooting on Friday, November 22.

Through the first car’s windscreen the president’s hand can be seen reaching towards his head as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy holds his forearm as the motorcade proceeds along Elm Street past the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas.

Another picture shows Lee Harvey Oswald being led down a corridor of the Dallas police station for another round of questioning in connection with the crime.
Oswald, who denied any involvement, was formally charged with murder but was shot and killed by Jack Ruby two days after his arrest.
The FBI and the Warren Commission both concluded that Oswald had acted alone, but conspiracy theories persist.
