STAFF at Carlisle Castle have explained some of the history behind apart of the building.
One of the turrets was part of the tower where Mary Queen of Scots was held when she fled to England hundreds of years ago.
A spokesperson from the castle said: "When visiting the site it’s easy to miss one of our most historic features.
"This octagonal turret is the last surviving remnant of ‘Queen Mary’s Tower’, where Mary Queen of Scots was held after fleeing across the border into England in 1568.
"The tower was originally built in 1308 and occupied one of the oldest parts of the castle complex, the site of the original entrance in the east wall."
