Multi-talented young Cumbrian athlete Amy Johnstone claimed triple medal success at the North of England Under-13 and Under-15 Indoor Championships.

The Carlisle Aspatria Athletics Club member won gold in the under-13 girls’ long jump and the 200m, and silver in the 60m.

Johnstone, who attends Richard Rose Central Academy, showcased her ability on all three fronts at the top regional event in Sheffield.

Her victory in the long jump saw the young Cumbrian top the podium with a distance of 4.67m.

That followed Johnstone reaching second position after her first three jumps, qualifying for a further three in which she proved the best in the field.

The promising athlete, who is coached by Paul van Iterson and David Jackson, also put in strong performances in the 200m, gaining comfortable wins in the heats and semi-finals.

In the final she maintained a storming start and led the race to win in a time of 28.08secs.

A third tilt at success came in the 60m in which Johnstone qualified comfortably for the final, winning her heat and semi-final.

She produced her best time of the tournament in the final with 8.40secs but was narrowly beaten into second place by Grace Gode from Leeds City AC.

There was further success for Carlisle Aspatria AC in the Cumbria Indoor Track and Field Championships in Gateshead with five athletes bringing home medals.

Jamie Turnbull took gold in the under-13 boys’ 60m, 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump and shot putt.

Isla Armstrong won gold in the under-15 girls shot putt, while Archie Irving won gold in the under-17 boys triple jump and silver in the long jump.

Daniel Cattermole took gold in the under-17 boys long jump and silver in the under-17 boys triple jump.

And there was also gold for Ben Holmes in the under-15 boys 60m.
