A SERVICE of celebration was recently held to introduce the new lead chaplain for NCIC, Reverend Jane Natrass.

150 people gathered at St Cuthbert's Carlisle to celebrate the work the chaplaincy does across the region and the arrival of Reverend Natrass.

“I am really pleased that I have started my role as lead chaplain," said Reverend Natrass.

"It was a joyful occasion, recognising the diversity in the hospitals with the presence of many healthcare chaplains, chaplaincy volunteers, staff and friends from across NCIC."

Reverend Natrass was ordained in the Church of England in 2000. Before that she was an accountant and a business studies lecturer.

She served as a full time parish priest in Cumbria, ran seven city centre churches in York and has served in Newcastle upon Tyne.

"When I was leaving Cumbria, I was told that I was the most non-religious vicar in the area – down to earth and amongst the people," said Reverend Natrass.

"Much of my work as priest starts with “You don’t know me, but someone said you could help”. I hope that the same sentiment will apply in my new role.

"Somehow, I never managed to have only one church, there were always several churches to take care of and that multi serving seems to have been a thread in my life.

"It is a delight to see the positive changes in lives and I continue to be amazed at the difference support can make to so many, which makes me even more glad that I am part of it all.

"The infectious enthusiasm of my colleagues helps me to thrive in my work and I hope that will continue in my role as lead chaplain which I see as support for all who require or request it – from birth to death and everything in between and beyond, for patients, families and staff.

"Support is available 24 hours, 7 days a week. I love being among people and have been grateful to staff for their help and warm welcome."
