A MAN who committed arson by setting fire to a wheelie bin has been given a community order.

Jon-Jay Thompson, 28, of Victoria Terrace, Maryport, pleaded guilty to arson at an earlier hearing at Workington Magistrates’ Court. He had previously denied the offence.

Thompson set fire to the wheelie bin in Maryport on May 19. He also admitted possessing cannabis in Maryport on September 8.

Passing sentence on Tuesday, magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Thompson was fined £54. He was ordered to pay £235 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

An order was made for the forfeiture and destruction of the cannabis.
