More than 80 Church of England clergy in Cumbria are to face a 24-hour delay in being paid due to a national error.

As a result of human error, payments to clergy across the country, including Cumbria, due on Wednesday, January 31 have been delayed by 24 hours.

Clergy in Cumbria are part of a group of just under 7,000 priests across the country who have been affected.

The Church of England has apologises for any inconvenience caused by the error and have reassured clergy that any bank charges incurred as a result will be reimbursed.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Carlisle, said: “Having been made aware by the national Church of England of the 24-hour delay in payment to clergy we have, this morning, directly contacted all 81 stipendiary clergy in the Diocese of Carlisle, alerting them to the issue.

“Our email is in tandem with national communications which have been circulated to all those clergy affected.

“Whilst this issue is outside the Diocese’s control, we recognise the difficulties that such a delay can create, and we are very sorry if this has caused inconvenience for clergy.

“We continue to direct them to clergy.payments@churchofengland.org if they have any further queries.”
