A road has been closed in Cumbria this morning (Thursday, January 25) due to a sinkhole. 

Police have confirmed that Bairds Crossing near Kirkland is closed both ways due to a sinkhole at the Croasdale turn off.

The incident was reported just after 6pm last night, and the road was closed at 7.47am on Thursday.

On Facebook, Copeland Police wrote: 

"2165 and 1837 are currently at a large sinkhole that has appeared in the road between the A5086 Lamplugh and Kirkland village on a stretch of road called Bairds Crossing.

"The road is closed to all vehicles until Highways attend and assess how to fix the road.

"Please avoid the area until Highways engineers can resolve this incident.
Diversions will be put in place to access Kirkland Village and beyond, so please use the Inglenook Caravan/Felldyke road to access Kirkland Village and Ennerdale area.

"Further updates will be provided in due course."
